It’s that time of year again. Summer is saying Sayonara and Fall is tip-toeing in. If you’ve got a pool heater, you’re part of the lucky group that can extend your swim time past the summer season. If not, we’re here to help you prepare your pool for the off-season.

How do I close my pool for the winter?

Winter maintenance for warmer states does not vary much from summer maintenance. Even though you’re not actively swimming in the pool, it’s important to maintain proper water chemistry to ensure that the pool equipment remains in good shape.

This is a good time to give your pool a good scrub to make sure it goes into the downseason looking its best. Along with skimming debris from the pool’s surface, grab some Suncoast Tile & Liner Cleaner to scrub calcium and other buildup from your waterline. Also, take this time to give your walls and steps a good brushing to scrub off anything additional.

You’ll also want to check your cartridge filter, if you have one. Is it time to replace it? Or does it just need a nice deep clean with Suncoast Spray & Rinse? Either way, you’ll want to be sure that your filter is clean and that dirt, debris, and algae do not sit stagnant for several months between seasons.

What steps should I take prior to closing my pool for the winter?

This time of year is the perfect time to do some extra maintenance around your pool and replace parts that may have worn down during the season. Take the time to check your equipment’s’ O-rings. If they’re cracked, flattened, or bulging, you’ll want to replace them to ensure that the equipment is properly sealed.

If you’re a salt pool owner, check your salt cell. It may need a good cleaning after working hard all summer. If you see a white, flaky calcium buildup inside, it’s time to clean your salt cell with premixed Salinity Cell Cleaner.

Lastly, take a look at your high-use parts, like the filter basket, skimmer basket, and weir door. These parts go through a great deal of use over the life of the pool and need replaced from time to time. If you notice any cracked parts or broken pieces, it’s time to get them replaced.

How do I winterize my pool if it freezes where I live?

If you’re in an area where temperatures drop and freeze during the winter, you may want to consider winterizing your pool by following these steps:

  • Balance your pool water. Even though the pool will not be in use, proper chemistry will protect your equipment.
  • Drain the pool water to just below the skimmer line and drain all equipment. This will prevent damage in the event that your pool freezes and the water expands.
  • Add Suncoast Liquid Chlorine Shock and Suncoast Extended Control Algaecide to the pool water to sanitize the pool and protect against algae blooms.
  • Cover the pool with a winter or safety cover.

Now that the cooler weather is on its way and the pool has been tucked in for the season, it’s time to start thinking about other ways to enjoy your backyard. Adding an outdoor kitchen and firepit are wonderful ways you can still enjoy your outdoor living space when it’s chilly outside.
